The Lake of the Ozarks
History & Overview
The Lake of the Ozarks is a large, man-made lake created by the Osage
River in the northern part of the Ozarks in central Missouri. The Lake
of the Ozarks has a surface area of about 55,000 acres and over 1,150 miles
of shoreline in four Missouri counties. The main channel of the Osage
Arm stretches 92 miles from end-to-end.
When the lake was constructed in 1931, nearly
77 years ago, it was the largest man-made
lake of its kind in the United States. Today, there are over 70,000 homes
along the lake. Many of these are vacation homes. Because of its beauty
and size, The Lake of the Ozarks has become a major resort area and vacation
hotspot. More than 3 million people visit the lake annually and it is
promoted as the “Midwest Coast.”
